FINNISH FLUTE ASSOCIATION
What is the Finnish Flute Association?
Bill Dyer, a Canadian import to Finland, started the
"Tampereen
Huiluklubi" (Tampere flute club) in Tampere, the second largest city in
Finland, in December of 1981. In 1983, the club began printing and
distributing
"Huilisti" (Flutist) magazine, which was one of the motivating factors
for starting a nationwide flute society in Finland. The Finnish Flute
Association
(Suomen Huiluseura ry) held its founding meeting on April 17th, 1983,
and
Hannu Lehtinen was chosen the first president of the association.
At its conception, the aims of the association were listed as follows:
-
to sponsor national and/or international flute competitions
-
to produce and distribute original Finnish flute literature, as well as
translating foreign flute literature into Finnish
-
to invite foreign flutists to Finland for concerts and masterclasses
-
to arrange concerts and seminars by Finnish flutists
-
personal information and advice available through exchange of letters
and
in the columns of the association's own magazine
-
to develop international connections to flutists of other countries
through
their own flute societies.
These same goals are perhaps just as important to the association
today.
Many of these aims have already been met, and others are goals towards
which the association continues to strive. Membership in the Finnish
Flute
Association is 20 € a year, which includes a subscription to the
Huilisti
magazine.
