FINNISH FLUTISTS' DISCOGRAPHY
Petri Alanko
The Finnish flautist Petri Alanko studied at the Sibelius Academy in
Helsinki with Mikael Helasvuo and subsequently at the Freiburg Music Academy
in Germany with William Bennett and Hans-Peter Schmitz. He won first prize
at the 1989 Kobe International Flute Competition in Japan, and again at
the Munich ARD Competition one year later. Invitations followed for performances
in Germany, the United States and Japan, in addition to his career in Finland.
Mr Alanko served as Principal Flautist in the Zurich Opera Orchestra
in the 1987?1988 season, before taking the position of Principal Flute
with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He also works with the Finnish
Chamber Orchestra and the Kerberos Ensemble.
He has recordings for Ondine, BIS and Naxos labels.

Mikael Helasvuo
Mikael Helasvuo studied the flute at the Sibelius Academy under Juho Alvas and later under Professor Frantisek Cech at the Prague Conservatoire. He then joined the flute class of Aurele Nicolet at the Freiburg Music Academy. From 1976-1988 he played solo flute with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and he is nowadays in great demand as soloist and chamber musician in both the modern and the Baroque repertoire. He has in the past few years turned in particular to the Baroque flute. Mikael Helasvuo is a sensitive and intellectual musician; he is untiring in his search for new works and his study of the various aspects of musical expression. He is also teaching flute playing at the Sibelius Academy.

Matti Helin
Mr Helin studied
flute with Josef Rauttenbacher. At early age he got the principal flute
chair in Finnish National Opera Orchestra.Ten years later he changed to
same post in Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Again ten years onwards and
he leaves also this orchestra for starting as a flute lecturer in Sibelius-Academy,
which profession he still cultivates. Matti Helin also works as a guesting
professor in Estonian Music Academy and gives concerts with different ensembles
and alone.He has recorded flute music for Finnish Radio and Television.
Mr.Helin is playing on a special kind of flute; Carbon Fibre Flute.This
flute was invented by a Finnish industrial designer Matti Kähönen
and this CD is already a second one played by Matti Helin on this new instrument.
The flute is in production and there is an increasing number of flutist
adopting it now.
Mr.Helin has been along with the development of the new Carbon Fibre
Flute, but he is also collecting old instruments and restores them into
plauing condition. He made a video series of flute's history "The
Flute Through The Ages", where he plays on different types of historical
flutes.

Ilari Lehtinen
Born in 1947 in Helsinki as a son of a music teacher and pianist, Ilari Lehtinen studied flute under Kosti Mattsson, the principal flutist of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, followed by mastercourses by Severino Gazzelloni and Alexander Murray. The year 1968 was very important for him, when he went to a mastercourse by Jean-Pierre Rampal. He also studied flute with Aurele Nicolet and conducting with Francis Travis for 2 years.
In 1970 he won the Second prize in a Competition for Scandinavian Windplayers in Norway and the Jyväskylä Summer Festival named him as the debutante of the year in 1971.
Since 1974 Lehtinen has been the solo flutist of Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and got in 1993 the Doctor of Music degree with dissertation "Frederic the Great and his Influence on Flute Music". He is at the moment the president of the Finnish Flute Association.
